For one could not describe as perfect a building which was useful, but only briefly, or one which was inconvenient for a long time, or, being both durable and useful, was not beautiful.

-Andrea Palladio

Architecture changes the past as much as it changes the future.

What really happens to you when you die (diptych)

2019
45cm x 32cm (2 panels)
Archival Pigment Print
Edition of 5

This piece takes as its point of departure the 1998 film After Life, known in Japan as Wonderful Life (ワンダフルライフ Wandafuru Raifu), edited, written, and directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda.

A figure walks in deep snow, into darkness, into the picture. Under a cast of flat zenithal light, a staircase turns a corner connecting one planted area to another. The viewer is invited to contemplate allegorical themes of life and death through a pairing of images, both dreamlike and familiar.

The work invokes simultaneity, undecidability, and constructs a hermeneutic circle that merges the horizon of the here and now with the there and then.

Acid Western Front (diptych)

2019
40cm x 40cm (each framed panel)
Archival Pigment Print
Edition of 5

The first modern surveys of western territories employed stereoscopy, a photogrammetric technique that uses a binocular viewing instrument to penetrate the flatness of the picture plane.

In the standard Western genre, the journey westward follows the vector of a promise of happiness. Its inverse is a journey into darkness and despair; themes explored in the subgenre known as the Acid Western.

A white picket fence following an abstract vector of its own (surveyed property line) is interrupted by the trunk of a Douglas Fir. The fence continues on for only a short distance beyond the tree suggesting surrender and ineffectuality.
